Matthew’s
new work uses ceramic reproductions of the human heart in alternative
guises to explore man's awkward relationship with the material world.
Waiting in the butchers provided the inspiration when idly musing upon
what a perfectly formed, functional, beautiful if slightly repulsive object
the heart was. He bought a lamb's heart, took it home, photographed it
and modelled a clay replica.
His initial idea was to create surreal landscapes with giant, otherworldly
hearts dropped into them.
“It was also good to be creating sculptures again after so many
paintings. While making and reproducing clay hearts over and over, each
one slightly different to the last, I began to look at the heart as an
object in its own right and its many different guises and interpretations
within our language and popular culture”.
Matthew teaches Art & Design at Amman Valley School and is a member
of King Street Gallery Cooperative, Carmarthen .
